There was some kerfuffle over on Twitter about the campaign expenses of Kionne McGhee, who is running for the District 9 county commission seat and I was queried as to whether I had ever seen this kind of alleged use of campaign money for personal expenses.

Of course, I replied. The last time that Reverend Richard Dunn ran for reelection I ended up filing a complaint with the Florida Election Commission over his acceptance of cash, and a failure to file appropriate paperwork that in large part was based on his using campaign money to finance his lifestyle.

    It's Miami, Bitches!

COMMISSIONER JOE CAROLLO SHOWED UP AT A PRESS CONFERENCE TWO MONTHS AGO CLAIMING TO SUPPORT THE BLACK LIVES MATTER PROTESTERS. WITH CAROLLO HOWEVER, THERE'S ALWAYS A BUT, AND IN THIS CASE HE CLAIMED TO HAVE SPOTTED ONE PROTESTER WEARING A CAP WITH A VENZUELAN FLAG ON IT THAT SENT HIM INTO A ZENOPHOBIC TIZZY. BY LAST WEEK, HE'D HAD ENOUGH OF ALL THE PROTESTERS AND SO HE PUT ON HIS LAW & ORDER HAT AND INTRODUCED 2 POCKET ITEMS FOR COMMISSION APPROVAL

Joe Carollo has had his moments with the Miami Police Department, going all the way back to when he was a police cadet, or whatever he was doing in the department back then, and was alleged to have circulated a racist KKK flyer.

Once he got into politics, his run-in's with the police became political fights with various police chiefs over the years, including the time he  was mayor and basically forced his police chief at the time to resign over the actions he took when the feds showed up to take Elian from his Miami relatives.

When Carollo isn't accusing police chiefs of being incompetent or whatever else he dislikes about them, he's railing about individual police officers, like he did in February of this year when he went off on an extended rant about the treatment that he alleged he and his wife received at the hands of separate Miami police officers who he claimed had stopped both of them for traffic ticket violations in Little Havana.

In Carollo's mind these stops were nothing more than part of a larger conspiracy to set them up so that at some point in the future they would be stopped again, and this time carted off to jail.

You just can't make stupid, crazy shit up with Carollo that is crazier than what he makes up on his own.

If you're looking for something to waste time, you can do worse than watch the video of Carollo's going off during the commission meeting, and then the actual videos of both police stops involving him and his wife.

    NUMBER 172 - JULY 24, 2023

    谷歌梯子

Since February, when Carollo had this paranoid fit over being stopped, he's had an almost miraculous tranformation. He's become calmer, or at least quieter, which if you believe his third wife Ana Alliegro's allegation that he's bipolar might be because the medicine he takes for his bipolar condition has been changed and has leveled him out.

Carollo responds to money, which he's always in need of, and so Diaz de la Portilla arranged for Carollo to cash in on a little side deal. It's chump change, but it's better than no change, and it's a story that I will be writing about very soon.

The important thing for those looking at all of this from the outside is  that ever since Francis Suarez decided that he would rather be a full-time, talking-head mayor on cable TV rather than roll your sleeves up mayor tackling some really hard issues that are coming down the road by allowing Diaz de la Portilla and his hand picked city manager Art "I like to do deals behind closed doors" Noriega to run the city how they see fit, Carollo has backed off all the issues that he spent months plotting and scheming over including wanting to change the mayor's salary, limit him from taking outside employment, and most importantly, accounting for the hundreds of thousands of dollars a year that the 24 hour police protection he receives is costing the taxpayers.

All of those issues have been forgotten, as well as Carollo's occasional concern over the way money gets spent by the administration.

In return, this time of peace among the commissioners has allowed a lot of deals to be done behind closed doors because the "emergency powers" that the COVID virus has given to public officials the opportunity to side-step and/or bypass regular procedures.

So while Carollo has been tamed, he's still Carollo, and he requires the occasional opportunity to pose and posture for his political base - especially since he continues to lose the court battles over the Recall effort to remove him from office - so at the July 9th commission meeting he introduced two pocket items to let people know that he hasn't gone completely senile.

    R-20-0203 - Zero Tolerance ... by al_crespo on Scribd

I think that it's a pretty safe bet that none of you who read this - with the exception of folks inside City Hall knew that July 12th thru 18th had been declared Miami Police Department Appreciation Week, because even though it was unanimously approved by the commission, there wasn't a Proclamation issued, the Mayor didn't go out of his way to mention it as part of any of his TV appearances, nor does it seem that there were any official press notifications from the Communications Department to let the public know about this.

In fact, even the Chief of Police didn't cite it when he talked about the public showing appreciation for his officers on July 13th.

Here is the video that the Chief put out on Twitter on July 13th.

The second resolution was more in line with Carollo's so-called law and order attitude, and it was a declaration of, "Zero Tolerance On Any Type Of Vandalism Or Destruction Of City of Miami ("City") Property Or Private Property..." along with doing everything possible to arrest, prosecute and criminally punish anyone who does destroys property.

The behavior of protesters has always been a thorny one in this country because while the protests that led to the creation of our country resulted in the American Revolution, we want to ignore that today, and in the process to also ignore the fact that people who are forced for whatever reason to come into the streets to seek a redress of their grievances are by that point not overly interested in having their oppressors dictate the terms and conditions of how they can express their anger and frustration, as evidenced by how politicians and police departments continue to be quick to demand that the citizens who are upset, angry and/or fed up with the treatment that they've received at their hands - including the questionable murder and beating of hundreds, if not thousands of young Black and Brown men and women over the last few decades - must always behave with decorum and accept their guidelines and parameters on how they can protest.

There comes a point when people, who are titred of being fucked over also get tired of being told how to protest and how to express their anger, especially when as we are seeing so clearly today the people demanding that protesters behave are the same ones who are sanctioning and committing the kind of violence. shown in this video.

By the time these pocket items were introduced, most, if not all of the citizens watching had called it a day, and so the charade of putting off a vote while allowing another agenda item to be considered so as to allow for some time for public comment on this pocket item was really just another rope-a-dope move, that met the letter, but not the spirit of the law.

The resolution passed without any comments from either the public or any of the commissioners, and if you're keeping track of these kinds of things, after all the street protests, all the breast beating and promises by the Mayor and the City Commissioners and the Chief of Police about doing more than just pretending to listen to the concerns of all the people who have expressed outrage at the behavior of the police in the City of Miami, and all of the other issues about racism, inequality, and a general screwing of the residents by the politicians, the only piece of legislation that has been introduced and passed by the city commission is this pocket item that instructs the Chief of Police to go out and arrest any and everyone involved in the least form of vandalism and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the laws.

This was a, FUCK YOU PROTESTERS, Miami, Bitches! moment, hand delivered by a lying, crooked, psychopathic thug named Joe Carollo!

Here's a copy of his pocket item.

Invoking Hitler into comparisons about what goes on in this country aren't necessarily helpful to creating a better understanding of the issues, but it is what it is and the last couple months have produced many, many gruesome and horrific videos and photos of a kind of official violence not witnessed before in this country.

When it comes to Carollo however, nothing seems to have affected him so strongly as the can of red paint poured over the head of the statute of Christopher Columbus.

The statute stands outside the entrance to his office at the Bayfront Park Management Trust where he is chairman, and so instead of introducing a resolution in the normal way, he chose to sneak in a pocket item that no one in the public would know about or have an opportunity to read or provide intelligent comment on until it was introduced late in the meeting.

The use of pocket items to get around the right of the public to know or understand what the city commission is up to has become a real problem not only become the practice has become so regular, but because some of the items are really nasty, underhanded efforts to circumvent both the law and conventions of how the city has done business in the past.

In this case, after the items were introduced, the commission went on to deal with the appointment of citizens to the Civil Service Board where another Carollo scheme was revealed when he nominated Mary Lugo, his partner in crime back in 2018 when they were driving around Little Havana at night looking for dirt on Bill Fuller.

    NUMBER 174 - JULY 25, 2023

I'm willing to bet that while most everyone else has been focused on the COVID virus, the Miami Police Department, along with the Miami-Dade Police Department and agents for any number of federal law enforcement agencies have been doing a lot more than just providing traffic control and/or arresting protesters for walking on Miami's streets.

As police departments around the country started to deal with the protests after the murder of George Floyd, there is absolutely no question that some departments started making efforts to infiltrate the various protest groups either by using young, undercover cops, or by turning some protesters into informants who in turn have not only become the eyes and ears of the police, but in some cases have gone beyond simple informing to walking around wired up to record conversations that they have with their fellow protesters.

In Miami, unlike many other cities across the country there has never existed much in the way of political culture capable of mounting sizable protestsin response to the issues that aroused folks in other cites because the oxygen and manpower needed for protest was for decades sucked up by the preoccupation with Cuba and Fidel Castro.

This preoccupation resulted in ignoring almost any issue or problem that wasn't tied to Cuba. What protests that did take place and get the public's attention during these years were driven by a hardcore little band of right-wing agitators financed by politicians and exile groups who saw value in kindling the flames of anti-communism, either for political pressure and personal economic benefit, or for votes for the local politicians who were always eager to proclaim their commitment to hating Fidel Castro.

While there have been sporadic protests over other issues, the last time any sustained protests took place in Miami was when the Occupy Movement set up a protest village on the west lawn of the county building for month or so in 2011, and that lasted for only a few weeks before they were evicted and the organizers over time drifted off.

While the Occupy Miami Facebook page shows that 25,000 plus people are linked to it, the last post was on the page was on May 1, 2023.

Racial and ethnic divisions and distrust always worked against the kind of political organizing that could have developed a core constituency of people embracing a center, or left of center political  philosophy in Miami, and now, when there appears to be a budding coalition of protesters and groups who have embraced and committed themselves to protesting over Black Lives Matter issues, there is a serious lack of political experience and institutional to rely on.

Marxist rhetoric spouted by a small handful of so-called leaders that seem to have taken control over parts of this latest movement are not going to take folks very far, and the rhetoric of dialectical materialism is certainly not going to be of use in the kind of pragmatic political efforts required to achieve the changes that many protesters declare that they want.

While the protest marches may have decreased in size, the cops have been busy as little beavers because contrary to all the pronouncements about respecting free speech, and the right of citizens to protest, the real focus of folks like Miami Police Chief Jorge Colina has, and will always be to undermine and neutralize ANY protest movement, unless it is a movement that is completely passive and supine.

While Colina was first caught flat-footed on the first day of protest - he was too busy spouting off about his alleged feelings about the murder of George Floyd on Fox TV to pay attention to what directions a real protest might take - he has regrouped and not only changed his tone about the rights of protesters over the last two months, but more importantly, he has employed the toys at his disposal to not only keep track of these protesters but also to spy on them.

Cops love I-Spy toys, and while there's never enough government money to deal with issues involving improving the quality of life for regular folks, there's always been plenty of money for the latest in spying hardware and software that every self-respecting police department will claim they need to protect public safety.

Unbeknownst to most folks, including me, when the first protests  took place on Miami's streets back at the end of May, the Miami Police Department revealed that they had already had in place 349 video cameras on rooftops and other strategic locations all over downtown Miami, and that they had also set up a state-of-the-art command center to monitor those cameras.

Understand that if this hardware and technology was something that Colina was willing to reveal that his department was using on everyone, just what other technology and activities, including illegal activities, do you think the Miami Police Department is also using  that they don't want to admit to?

The department never responded or complied with that request, even though documents uncovered by other news organizations revealed that the Miami Police Department was indeed using this technology.

I also know from personal experience and the actions that the police department has taken in "investigating" me over the years that they  engaged in illegal activities that no one else in law enforcement has been willing to touch even though I obtained documents and witnesses to support my claims.

People in this country have a very short attention span, and therefore  many folks don't know or have forgotten that the history of government surveillance of private citizens has been long, intrusive and often illegal.

Twenty years ago, starting with the WTO protests in Seattle, and going forward to the major anti-globalization, anti-war protests, the national political conventions and even the FTAA protests in Miami that took place in the early 2000's, all of these protests and were monitored through the use of undercover police and informants, and some of those tactics resulted in lawsuits after it was discovered that cops in some cities had engaged in all kinds of illegal activities to keep track of the protesters, including in a handful of cases where it was discovered that undercover cops were  the agent provocateurs instigating violence.

Back then the technology was not as sophisticated as it is now, and a dollar to a donut says that protesters being arrested today are not only having ALL of the information on their cellphones downloaded by the cops while they're in custody, but that some are also having tracking software installed on those phones.

If you're a protester on the streets of this country today it's not unreasonable to be paranoid.

Cops have always been the agents and enforcers for the ruling political class, and many of these cops have never had any compunction about setting people up, and exploiting even the merest discussion of violence as a justification to arrest and prosecute people for political reasons.

Remember this, while the Miami-Dade State Attorney might be totally corrupt and unwilling to prosecute cops for shooting people, she'll  have no compunction about prosecuting some nitwit teenager who got sucked into a manufactured plot to do something stupid, and if she doesn't then the FBI and the US Attorney will be all too happy to do the deed and make it look like the plot was intended to destroy the city.

    POWER!

Getting it and keeping it is what politics and politicians are all about, and many today who read this might never have heard of the words of Mao Zedong, in no small part because he was a commie dictator who has been dead since long before some of these young people on the streets to day were born, but who as the leader of the communist revolution that overthrew the Nationalist Chinese government many years ago proclaimed, "Power grows out of the barrel of a gun."

So Mao knew what he was talking about, even if he was a commie.

In Boston, when the protesters boarded that sailing ship filled with tea that had been imported by the East India Company, none of them  showed up shouting, "No Justice, No Peace!"

No, they shouted, "Fuck You!," threw the tea overboard, and then when the British came after them they picked up their guns and went to war!

Some on both the political right and the left would like to see another revolution, and there are those who are hoping that what is going on in cities like Portland and Seattle will lead to a spark that ignites that next revolution.

I seriously doubt that it will reach that point, although the anger in the streets is real and based on decades of horrific behavior by rogue police, corrupt politicians and a persistent level of racism and abuse of poor people that justifies multiple revolutions, but there's no question that the introduction of unwanted federal agents by the President has all the earmarks of an effort to exploit an already volatile situation for purely political purposes that could easily go badly with unintended consequences.

The times have changed, and while there are those eager for a political eruption that would cause people to rise up in significant numbers, don't think for one minute that even if they didn't, that if push ever came to shove in some cities including Miami, that  shooting protesters on the streets with real bullets is out of the question.

There is not that much of a leap between rubber bullets and real bullets in the minds of some folks, and if that's what it would take to protect and keep in power the likes of scumbags like Joe Carollo, Alex Diaz de la Portilla, Francis Suarez, and all the other crooks and scammers at Miami City Hall, you can bet that some moron would at some point start firing real bullets.

So, since you all in Miami don't have the manpower to start a revolution, or even to mount and sustain a really robust protest movement, here are some personal suggestions for those of you who are tired of marching in the streets with protest signs and slogans that seem to accomplish little, but still want to see political change.

First, always protect yourself! There's nothing wrong in being paranoid if in fact there are people who are out to get you.

Changing the world is hard, complicated, time consuming, and eventually even thankless!  You can make a difference, but you'll find out if you stay at it long enough that changes often only happen at the edges, and sometimes it's by stopping bad shit from happening instead of getting good shit to happen.

There are no magic bullets that will get you what you want, and sometime what you get, really isn't what you wanted.

Protests are good to gain attention, but bad when it comes to changing polices and practices. That requires rational and reasonable discussion, without slogans and protest signs.

ALWAYS, AND I MEAN ALWAYS sweat the small stuff!

Written words really matter, and there are a thousand ways that seasoned bureaucrats and conniving politicians have learned how to screw the public by the way that they've written an ordinance, or changed the placement of a comma.

    There are no short cuts!

LEARN and remember the 10,000 hour rule. He/she who controls the paperwork in a bureaucratic world controls the game. To acquire the knowledge of how to control the paperwork is going to take time, effort and a commitment to learn and to accept that documents sometimes don't take you where you thought they would, or where you wanted them to take you.

You can be an asshole at times, but always try to be an asshole for the right reasons, not just because you really are an asshole!

AlLWAYS, AND I MEAN ALWAYS follow the money!

Lastly, and most importantly, be true to yourself and your principles! At the end of the day, it matters less what people say or think of you than what you think of yourself when you look in the mirror.

When it comes to the practical issues of dealing with politicians and the political process, a couple months ago I put together a list of questions and links to websites that can help focus your attention on what you need to ask yourself, and that can provide you with some answers and guidance.

    HERE IS THAT LIST:

Have you ever heard of a legal term called "Content Neutral?" If you haven't go HERE and find out.

As distasteful as some of you might find this, have you ever attended a meeting where candidates for Mayor and/or city or county commissioners appeared?

Did you ever ask any of them a question?

If you're old enough, are you registered to vote? If you need to register the link to the Miami-Dade County Board of Elections is HERE.

    Have you ever voted??

Have you ever volunteered to get people to the polls?

IN SHORT, HAVE YOU EVER DONE ANYTHING TO CHANGE THE WORLD EXCEPT BITCH?

The odds are always stacked against those seeking change, because the people who have power have never demonstrated a willingness to surrender that power without a struggle, but change can happen and it requires focus, persistence and a willingness to dig in and fight the long fight.

    Good luck!

A PERSONAL MESSAGE TO ALL YOU YOUNG PROTESTERS FROM AN OLD PROTESTER

    TO ALL CONCERNED,

Please be informed that Seniors in Action made a delivery of boxes of food for the Seniors at Counsel Tower North, 1040 Collins Avenue, today July 30th, 2023. Canvassing staff from Candidate Renier Diaz De La Portilla is distributing the boxes and telling the seniors that this food is being donated by Renier Diaz De La Portilla and asking for their Vote. In addition, an employee from City of Miami Beach is helping in this event. Attached, please find a picture of the employees City car and Candidate Renier Diaz De La Portilla staff member with a clip board in the lobby, additional staff was distributing the boxes of food throughout the building and telling the residents that the food was being donated by Candidate Renier Diaz De La Portilla and also, asking for the residents Votes. All these can be reviewed in the building video surveillance camera system.

The boxes of food delivered by Seniors in Action are paid by State of Florida and Federal Tax Dollars and it is illegal for a Candidate to use our tax dollars for his personal campaign. This has been a continued practice by Candidate Renier Diaz De La Portilla and all low  income housing projects have surveillance video systems that can confirm this illegal action throughout the entire district 5 low income housing buildings. This criminal action using our tax dollars must not be allowed no matter what your last name is or who your brother is.

This building has 5 case confirmed with Covid-19 and the memo emailed by Matthew W. Garwick on July 15th (Attached) prohibits all candidates and their staff from entering these building and the Renier Diaz De La Portilla Campaign is violating this order all over the beach, risking contamination of Covid-19 to residents in other buildings and using our tax dollars for his campaign.

You can confirm everything stated in this email by interviewing the tenants at all your senior housing projects and reviewing the video surveillance camara system.

Commissioner Higgins and my Campaign along with all other candidates have respected the Memo issued by the City of Miami Beach and the guide lines from the Housing Department to avoid increasing the risk to seniors. The Renier Diaz De La Portilla Campaign has irresponsible decided to place our seniors at risk and this is not acceptable to our seniors and the other candidates from all races from County Mayor, Judges, etc.

YOU CAN'T HAVE AN ELECTION IN MIAMI-DADE COUNTY WHERE ONE OF THE DIAZ DE LA PORTILLA BROTHERS IS INVOLVED WITHOUT THERE BEING WHOLESALE VIOLATIONS OF FLORIDA'S ELECTION LAWS

Alex and Renier Diaz de la Portilla are classic examples of grifters who have discovered that running for public office is like having the keys to a private piggy bank that gets filled with money from people who in many instances know exactly the kind of scum that these two brothers are, and are more than happy to give them thousands and tens of thousands of dollars because they can be depended on - most of the time - to deliver on the sweetheart deals agreed to with under the table handshakes.

It's not just that these brothers openly make little effort to hide their activities when it comes to their tactics in getting these people to fork over money, but in order to get elected, they also have to make sure they get the majority of votes, and as I first reported in May of last year, Alex Diaz de la Portilla had developed, with the help of Marjorie Carollo, the wife Commissioner Joe "Comemierda" Carollo, a pipeline of largely illegal Venezuelan women recruited online to be campaign workers for both his county commission effort and his subsequent city commission race.

In my story last May I revealed transcripts of phone texts between some of these women working for Alex's unsuccessful campaign for county commissioner as they illegally trolled the hallways of senior citizen housing looking for prospective absentee ballot signatories, and who as the transcripts revealed, had little compunction in tearing up ballots that might have a vote for Alex's opponent.

I know when I learned that Renier had decided to run for that same county commission seat that it would only be a matter of time before I started getting word about Renier's "campaign workers" trolling the hallways, like they had for his big brother Alex.

Last night I, along with 56 other folks got a copy of the email and accompanying photos sent by Miguel Soliman, who is also running for the District 3 seat.

The letter chronicles the usual misbehavior that has been associated with all the recent, and probably All of the political campaigns that these guys have ever been involved in.

Which raises serious questions as to why, or why year in and year out these kinds of violations are allowed to occur with impunti not only by the Diaz de la Portilla brothers and others like them who look at and treat the campaign laws of Florida  as a joke.

Just days ago, the Police Chief of Miami got a stepladder to get on his high horse to declare that Mate30pro If they did, he would have his officers arrest the protesters and cart them off to jail.

Yet no one has, or would ever declare a "Zaro Tolaerance," for the illegal acts committed by the campaign workers on a daily basis, nor has a city manager ever fired a public employee for using a city vehicle in the furtherance of a political campaign.

The state attorney won't do anything. The city managers, and the county mayor won't do anything, the Florida Elections Commission will accept a complaint, take months, if not years to investigate it, and then maybe, just maybe impose a chump change fine.

The laws have no teeth, the public officials have no courage, the police chiefs are cowards who selectively choose whose rights to abuse for political reasons, and the politicians all know this and do what they want, when they want and laugh all the way to the ballot box.

Here is Soliman's letter and photos.
